Whenever there is a decline in Dharma and a rise of Adharma, Lord Vishnu, the savior of the universe, himself descends on earth to establish balance.
Lord Vishnu performs his pastimes in many forms, even though He is unborn. This divine act is for His own pleasure, and as a result, the desires of devotees are also fulfilled. The descent of Lord Vishnu from His eternal abode on earth is called an ‘Avatar‘.
The Supreme Lord Hari has assumed many incarnations to protect the saints, destroy evil forces, and establish righteousness through His divine pastimes. In fact, His forms are said to be infinite.
Here is a brief description of the 10 major incarnations of Lord Vishnu and their interesting stories:
1. Story of Matsya Avatar
Once, the demon Hayagriva went to Brahmaloka, stole the entire Vedas from Lord Brahma, and hid them deep in the ocean. As a result, the world as a whole became irreligious and filled with darkness.
At the request of Brahma, Lord Vishnu assumed the form of a divine fish (Matsya). He dived into the ocean, fought with the demon, and tore him apart with the tip of His snout. After slaying Hayagriva, Lord Matsya retrieved the Vedas and restored them to Lord Brahma.
“This avatar represents the protection of divine knowledge.”

2. Story of Varaha Avatar
During the time of Svayambhuva Manu, the earth (Prithvi) had drowned in the cosmic ocean. Disturbed by this, Lord Brahma sought refuge in Lord Vishnu.
At that moment, a tiny boar (Varaha) emerged from Brahma’s nostril. In an instant, He expanded into a gigantic, mountain-like form, shaking the universe with a tremendous roar.
Lord Varaha leapt into the sky and then plunged into the ocean, His body as hard as a thunderbolt. He reached across the waters, cutting through the depths with His arrow-shaped hooves. There, he saw the Bhudevi (Mother Earth), the shelter of all living beings in the abyss. Gently lifting the earth on its teeth, the Lord rose out of the water.
But, to hinder His path as He came out, the demon Hiranyaksha attacked him, striking him with a mace. A fierce underwater battle followed, in which Lord Varaha slew the demon and restored the earth to safety.

“This avatar signifies the triumph of righteousness over arrogance.“
3. Story of Kacchap (Kurma) Avatar
When the three worlds, including Indra, were devoid of glory due to the curse of Rishi Durvasa, Indra and others took refuge in Lord Brahma. Brahma then led them to the abode of Lord Vishnu and offered Him homage.
Lord Vishnu instructed them to make a treaty with the demons and collaborate for the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean). He warned them: “First poison will come out, do not fear it. Then, many precious gems will appear; do not covet them. In the end, nectar (amrita) will come out, and I will make you drink it with my intelligence.” Accepting this, the gods made a treaty with King Bali, the leader of the demons.
When the churning began, the Mandarachal mountain, used as the churning rod, began to sink into the ocean due to its heavy weight and lack of support. Seeing all this, the gods and demons became disheartened.
At that moment, Lord Vishnu assumed the form of a giant tortoise (Kurma), one of His divine incarnations. Entering the ocean with His colossal body and thousands of strong limbs, He lifted the Mandarachal Mountain on His back. With this, the gods and demons resumed the churning of the ocean with renewed vigor.

4. Story of Narasimha Avatar
Lord Varaha killed Hiranyaksha. After the death of his brother, Hiranyakashipu performed severe penance and received a boon from Lord Brahma that he could not be killed by man or beast, inside or outside, day or night, or by any weapon. That world-conquering demon, by his might, snatched away the places of all the guardians of the world and himself started living in Indra Bhavan.
Prahlad, among the sons of Hiranyakashipu, was a devotee of Lord Hari since birth, so he wanted to kill him.
To protect his devotee Prahlad, Lord Vishnu manifested as Narasimha, half-man and half-lion, and destroyed Hiranyakashipu, thus restoring Dharma.
“This avatar proves that divine justice transcends worldly limitations.”

5. Story of Vaman Avatar
King Bali was performing a great yajna on the north bank of the river Narmada. All the gods were worried that if Bali completed the yajna, he would become the most powerful among all. At that time, Lord Vishnu incarnated as a dwarf Brahmin, named Vamana, carrying an umbrella, a stick, and a Kamandalu filled with water in His hand. He appeared to humble the pride of Bali.
King Bali welcomed Vamana and said, “It seems you want something. Whatever you desire, please ask me.” The Lord smiled and asked for three steps of land, and Bali agreed.
The moment the vow was taken, the form of Vamana began to grow so vast that all beings and the entire universe appeared within Him. Seeing this ferocious form of Lord Vaman, all the demons became frightened. With one stride, He measured the earth. With the second, He covered the heavens. There was nothing left for the third step.
Then Lord Vamana said, “In two steps, I have taken all your possessions. Now, where shall I place my third step?” The Lord was testing Bali, but he did not waver. Politely, Bali replied: “O Lord, tell me, who is greater — wealth, or the one who owns it?” The Lord answered: “The owner is always greater, for wealth remains under his control.” Then Bali bowed and said, “You have taken all my wealth in two steps. Place your third step upon my head.”

“This avatar teaches humility and the greatness of devotion.“
6. Story of Lord Parashurama
Once, a Kshatriya king went into the forest and lost his way. While searching for the right path, he reached the ashram of a sage. The sage welcomed him with proper hospitality, which surprised the king. How could a forest dweller possess such opulence?
He discovered that this prosperity came from the divine Kamadhenu Cow. Greedy for it, the king demanded the cow. When the sage refused, the king forcibly seized Kamadhenu and even killed the sage.
At that time, Lord Parashurama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, was not at home. On returning, he found his mother mourning. Knowing the reason, he resolved to punish the Kshatriyas. It is said that his mother beat her chest 21 times in grief, and thus Lord Parashurama annihilated the Kshatriya race twenty-one times.

After this, Parashurama performed the Ashwamedha Yagna and donated the entire earth to Sage Kashyapa. To ensure that the earth was not completely devoid of rulers, Sage Kashyapa told Parashurama: “Now this earth belongs to me, so you must leave it.” Respecting this, Parashurama departed towards the southern sea. The Ocean God (Samudra Deva) granted him residence at Mount Mahendra.
Lord Parashurama is believed to be Chiranjivi (immortal), and it is said that only a few fortunate and virtuous souls are blessed to see him.
“This avatar represents justice, discipline, and the destruction of arrogance.”
7. Story of Lord Rama Avatar
King Dasharatha had four sons: Shri Rama, Bharata, Lakshmana, and Shatrughna. Among them, Lord Rama was the incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
One day, Sage Vishwamitra requested King Dasharatha to send Rama and Lakshmana to protect his yajna. The princes valiantly destroyed many demons, including Tataka, Maricha, and Subahu, ensuring the yajna’s success. Later, along with the sage, they went to Janakpur (Mithila) to attend Sita’s Swayamvar, where Lord Rama married Sita (daughter of King Janaka) after breaking the mighty Shiva Dhanush (which could not even move).
Over time, King Dasharatha wished to crown Rama as his heir. But Queen Kaikeyi demanded two promises from him: “first, that her son Bharata be crowned king, and second, that Rama should go into exile for fourteen years.” Due to her demand, Rama chose to uphold his father’s word and went into exile for fourteen years. Sita and Lakshmana also accompanied him. During the exile, Ravana abducted Sita. Seeking her, Rama, guided by Shabari’s advice, met Hanuman and befriended Sugriva. After killing Vali, he established Sugriva as the king of Kishkindha.
Sugriva then sent the vanara (monkey) army in search of Sita. Later, on the seashore, Rama attempted to dry up the ocean with his arrows, but Samudra Deva appeared and advised him to build a bridge. With the help of Nal and Neel, the great Rama Setu was built. Crossing the ocean, Lord Rama waged a fierce war in Lanka, ultimately slaying Ravana, rescuing Sita, and restoring dharma.
“This avatar stands as the eternal symbol of truth, duty, and righteousness (dharma).”
8. Story of Lord Krishna Avatar
One of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu appeared in the form of Shri Krishna in Kansa’s prison. All the activities of Lord Krishna since his birth are amazing and supernatural. He killed Putana, Trinavarta, Bakasura, Vatsasura, Dhenukasura, and Pralambasura. He protected the cows in the forest, subdued Kaliya Naag, and saved his father from a python. After performing the Govardhan Leela, Indra and Kamadhenu came and performed abhishek of Lord Krishna.
Thereafter, Akrura came to Vrindavan from Mathura, and along with him, Krishna and Balarama left for Mathura. There, they killed the mighty Kuvalayapid elephant, the wrestlers Mushtika and Chanura, and finally Mama Kansa himself. They freed Mother Devaki and Father Vasudeva from prison, and also liberated King Ugrasena, restoring him to the throne. Later, they studied at Sandipani Guru’s ashram, where Krishna brought back to life his Guru’s dead son as Guru Dakshina.
He defeated Jarasandha and Kalayavana (the latter being burnt by Muchukunda’s divine power). After settling in Dwarka, the people were miraculously transported there overnight. The Kalpavriksha and the Sudharma Sabha were also brought from heaven. Lord Krishna abducted Rukmini and married her after defeating many enemies. He also slew the demon Bhaumasura and gave refuge to sixteen thousand captive women, marrying them with honor.

“This avatar embodies love, wisdom, and devotion.”
9. Story of the Buddha Avatar
The power of the demons had increased. The gods could not stand before them and ran away to save their lives out of fear of the demons. The demons started performing yajnas and became even more powerful. To stop them, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Buddha. He carried a broom in his hand, sweeping the path before walking on it.
In this way, Lord Buddha reached near the demons and preached:
“Performing yajna is a sin. Yajna leads to violence against animals. How many living beings are destroyed in the fire of yajna? See, how careful I am to avoid harming any creature — first I clean the path by sweeping, then I step on it.”
The demons, impressed by the teachings of Buddhadeva, abandoned yajna and Vedic practices. As a result, their strength weakened within a few days. The gods then attacked the weakened demons and defeated them.
Later, Siddhartha Gautama, after attaining enlightenment, came to be known as Gautama Buddha. He moved to Varanasi and delivered his first sermon at Sarnath.
“This avatar teaches kindness and spiritual awakening.”
10. Story of Kalki Avatar
At the end of Kaliyuga, when even the houses of the righteous will be hindered in the story of God, Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas will become hypocrites, and Shudras will be kings. The kings will almost become robbers. Then, Lord Vishnu will incarnate as a child in the house of Visnuyasha in the village of Sambhal to end the Kaliyuga.
Parashurama will teach him the Vedas. Lord Shiva will teach him the use of weapons and gift him a horse and a sword. Then, Lord Kalki will lead an army of Brahmins and destroy the Mlecchas spread across the world. By destroying the sinful and wicked, he will initiate the beginning of Satya Yuga.

Those Brahmin princes will be very strong, intelligent, and mighty. According to dharma, having achieved victory, he will become a Chakravarti King and will bring joy to the entire world.
“This avatar not only symbolizes the end of darkness and corruption but also the renewal of righteousness, hope, and the dawn of Satya Yuga.“
